Overview

SplitBear ("the App") is built by Bear and Eddy with privacy as a core principle. We do not sell or share your personal data with advertisers or data brokers. The App stores your data locally on your device and syncs it to a secure cloud service to enable features like group collaboration and multi-device access.

Data Storage & Cloud Sync

All expense data, groups, and settings are stored locally on your device using SwiftData. In addition, your data is automatically synced to a secure cloud service (Supabase) when the App is in use. This sync runs on app launch and when the App returns to the foreground.

The following data is synced:

  • Your display name and avatar
  • Group names, settings, and membership
  • Expenses, settlements, and categories
  • Receipt photos attached to expenses

This data is transmitted securely and stored to enable group sharing, multi-device access, and data backup. It is not used for any other purpose.

Error Logging

SplitBear sends error logs to our cloud service when something goes wrong in the App. These logs include technical context about the error (such as the error message and where it occurred) to help us diagnose and fix issues. Error logs do not contain your personal financial data.

Subscriptions

SplitBear Pro subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not collect, store, or have access to any payment information, credit card numbers, or billing details.

Analytics & Tracking

SplitBear includes no traditional analytics frameworks, no tracking pixels, and no advertising SDKs. We do not track how you use the App or build user profiles. During beta testing, the App may include a crash reporting and feedback SDK (BugBear) to help us improve stability. This may be removed in production releases.

Apple Wallet & FinanceKit

SplitBear can import transactions from Apple Wallet using Apple's FinanceKit framework. This requires your explicit permission. Imported transaction data (merchant name, amount, date) is stored locally on your device and synced to the cloud as part of your expense data. We do not access your bank accounts, card numbers, or other financial credentials.

Photos & Camera

SplitBear requests camera and photo library access for the receipt scanning feature. Photos are processed on-device using Apple's Vision framework to extract expense information. Receipt images are stored locally and synced to the cloud as part of your expense data.

Third-Party Services

SplitBear connects to the following external services:

  • A currency exchange rate API to provide live conversion rates. No personal information is sent — only the currency pair being looked up.
  • The Unsplash API to fetch backdrop photos for groups. No personal information is sent with these requests.
  • Supabase for cloud data sync and error logging, as described above.

SplitBear also uses Apple's MapKit for merchant location lookup, which is an Apple system service governed by Apple's own privacy policy.

Data Deletion

You can delete any group, expense, or settlement within the App at any time. Deleted data is also removed from the cloud during the next sync. To remove all data, delete the App from your device and contact us to request deletion of your cloud data.

Children's Privacy

SplitBear is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any data from children. If you believe a child has provided data through the App, please contact us so we can address it.
